Carlyle founders reap bumper 2011 profits

By Greg Roumeliotis
NEW YORK (Reuters) - Founders of private equity firm Carlyle Group (:CYL.UL) have had a great payday as a result of the firm's record performance in 2011 and are set to gain even more as it prepares for an initial public offering, a regulatory filing on Tuesday showed.
The billionaire founders, William Conway, Daniel D'Aniello and David Rubenstein, received $134 million each in cash distributions and $3.8 million in executive compensation, according the filing.
On top of this, Conway, D'Aniello and Rubenstein received $70.8 million, $77.6 million and $56.8 million from previous investments. The filing does not state how much of that was their initial investment or what their profit on that was.
They also invested big in Carlyle funds in 2011. Conway invested $163.8 million, D'Aniello put in $98.3 million and Rubenstein put in $96.9 million, according to the filing.
They also charged Carlyle for business use of their private airplanes and associated services and supplies. Conway received $1.3 million, D'Aniello got $676,014, while Rubenstein got the most, $3.3 million, according to the filing.
"As the co-founder primarily responsible for, among other things, maintaining strong relationships with and securing future commitments from Carlyle's investors, particularly outside the United States Mr. Rubenstein has an exceptionally rigorous travel schedule," Carlyle said in the filing.
Rubenstein traveled outside of Washington D.C., where Carlyle is based, for more than 250 days in 2011, visiting 24 countries and 33 non-U.S. cities, many of which he visited on multiple occasions, the firm said.
RECORD YEAR
In the first nine months of 2011, Carlyle distributed more than $15 billion to its fund investors, a record performance. In 2010 it distributed $8 billion. In its second-best year, 2007, it distributed $8.9 billion.
Much of the huge returns came from asset sales as the group exited many investments. Last July, Carlyle also completed its acquisition of a 60 percent stake in AlpInvest, one of the world's largest investors in private equity.
The firm will likely seize on the strong numbers to promote its IPO. Unlike its peers Blackstone Group LP (NYSE:BX - News), KKR & Co LP (NYSE:KKR - News) and Apollo Global Management LLC (NYSE:APO - News) that have floated on the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE:NYX - News), Carlyle said on Tuesday it would list on Nasdaq (NasdaqGS:NDAQ - News).
Carlyle Chief Financial Officer Adena Friedman joined the firm early last year from Nasdaq, where she had worked since 1993, serving in various positions until she became CFO of Nasdaq in August 2009.
Economic net income (ENI), a measure used by private equity firms to report earnings, was up in the first nine months of 2011 to $578.9 million from $368 million in the year-ago period. ENI for the whole of 2010 was just over $1 billion.
Total assets under management as of the end of September were $148.6 billion, up from $94.9 billion 12 months earlier. Available capital for investments, commonly known as dry powder, was $41.5 billion as of the end of September 2011.

System 500
Securaplane System 500
• Reliable
Achieved through years of avionics design, sensor
innovation, system redundancy, and severe environmental
testing.
• Field Proven
Over 500 systems installed since 1989, on aircraft
ranging from B-747-400’s through turboprops. References
available.
• Remote Operation
The System 500 can be controlled from up to 10 miles
(16 km) away using handheld UHF Transceiver, with clear
digitized voice responses from the aircraft. (Actual range
depends upon terrain and line of sight.) Features “secure”
anti-tampering technology. Only 3 commands required
via the handheld UHF Transceiver to Arm, Disarm or
Interrogate the system.
• Simple Operation
The System 500 is simple to Arm, Disarm, and Interrogate
using the Control Display Unit (CDU-550), typically
mounted in the cabin. It features easy to use functions,
displaying information on a 4-line, plain English LCD.
The CDU permanently stores over 1600 events, including
arm/disarm times and intrusion times, locations and
duration. Soft menu keys allow for easy and intuitive use.
The system can also be controlled using the Digital Alarm
Indicator (DAI-08), a subminiature remote control panel
which mounts inside an external door. Each operation is
clearly indicated in plain English on the bright, 10-character
scrolling LED display. This unit allows for keyless arming
and disarming.
It takes only minutes to learn to operate the System 500.
• Superior Sensors
Wheelwell Protection
Custom designed, environmentally tested (DO-160C)
passive infrared sensors with temperature compensation
detect any human intrusion in wheelwells. This sensor
revolutionized the science of reliable aircraft intrusion
detection.
Door Panel Sensors
Featuring the unique ruggedized all-metal magnetic reed
switch (MAG-01). Securaplane's flexible systems can use
a variety of sensor types, such as microswitches and our
preferred MAG-01.
• Installation Ease
Acclaimed by installers to be the easiest and least time
consuming system to install and troubleshoot.
• Battery Endurance
The standard 500 system using the BP-550 Power
Communications Unit (PCU) will run 5-7 days. An optional
BP-650 will provide 7-10 days. A BP-1224 ADD-ON battery
pack will double the BP-650 run time.
• Most Commonly Selected Options:
- Cameras: Securaplane's Airborne Video Camera
system provides a second level of intrusion
monitoring for the surveillence of internal
and/or external areas of the aircraft. (BP-1224
Auxiliary Battery Pack recommended for systems
with video cameras installed)
- VRU-01: 104dBm audible, operator programmable,
voice alarm.
- SP-02: Solar panel extends battery life.
- CPM-TZ: PIR (wheelwell sensor) alignment tool.

I AWAIT YOUR THOUGHTS-FROM WSJ.COM

Stephen Schwarzman, one of Wall Street's most prominent deal makers, is going out of his way to keep the details of his personal fortune a closely held secret.
Blackstone Group LP is changing the structure of its investment in a Florida bank after Mr. Schwarzman, founder and chief executive of the private-equity firm, balked at providing information about his personal finances to the Federal Reserve, according to people familiar with the situation.
Blackstone is converting part of its 14.1% stake in BankUnited Inc. to nonvoting preferred stock, these people said. The deal will shrink its voting stake to less than ...
My Favorite Comment:
I just love this. The FED...a private organization populated by Goldman Sachs personnel... demand information on shareholders of competeing banks. My GOD!

It's a bit unclear why Schwarzman is now clamming up when it comes to his wealth.
This is, after all, the man who threw the 60th birthday party to end all parties. His estimated net worth of $4.7 billion has been previously reported. As has his predilection for $400 stone crabs and maniacal attention to his servants uniforms
