Freya, Nilaya, Unfurled And Seahawk In Front
Winners of the first day of racing in their respective divisions were the 34m Nilaya (Class A), the 46m Unfurled (Class B), the 59m Seahawk (Class C) and the 28m Freya (Class D).
Blue skies and brisk north-easterly winds of 18 to 22 knots made for thrilling conditions for the 21-strong fleet of sailing yachts to the starting line for the first day of racing. The day's course was a clockwise circumnavigation of Virgin Gorda covering almost 30 miles, with boats navigating outside the reef and dealing with a channel of rough seas before raising their colorful spinnakers for a downwind run.
The winners of each category kept up diligent focus in the face of challenges to get their boats across the finish line. Winner of Class A Nilaya's tactician Bouwe Bekking summed up the day's work for his and likely all participants, "I think that's the nice thing about sailing on big boats. It's not me bringing the win, it's the team. It's a team effort and we sailed really well."
With the second day of racing just beginning, participants face another intense day on the water. Tonight, Oil Nut Bay invites owners and guests to an exciting themed beach party to celebrate successes and gear up for the last day of racing on Saturday.
